2010/11 Popcorn - Quezon City, Philippines

Why not discover Quezon City? A city within a city, where few mongers have invested the time or effort in pursuit of the undiscovered treasures which pervade this setting. As most are aware, since the experiences of fellow CH Members in Angeles City, Ermita and Makati are not lacking and in many ways repetitive, I’m compelled to offer a useful summary of interest or a guide for others who may wish to explore this neglected destination. I did manage a few days in Angeles and Ermita but the bulk of this report will focus on Quezon (Kay-San) City.

I’m of the opinion you can, Make It Happen, Watch It Happen, or just sit around and say “What The Fuck Happened”. I’m not looking to glorify myself at all, just sharing my experiences and informing other members I’m a bit more outgoing and adventuresome than most. If you are accustomed or predisposed for the path of least resistance, you would probably be better served to avoid Quezon City. Not that hooking up is any more difficult here than in Angeles or Makati. Yes, it is a well known fact that Angeles has the lowest prices when comparing ladies drinks/bar fines to most anywhere in the Philippines. But no one will convince me that paying a bar fine is the best guarantee of a good time with your companion. In many ways, the whole bar fine mentality diminishes the experience from the get go. So play as you prefer, but if you’re willing to forgo the Bar Fine Syndrome, who knows what could pop up? Yes, I would submit it does require a higher level of preparation, confidence and an open mind doesn’t hurt either. With that in mind the rewards can be in many ways superior to the aforementioned methods and well traveled destinations. So let’s roll with that and see what Quezon City has to offer…

TRAVEL

I booked my flight and hotel well in advance and found a fairly reasonable airfare/hotel package on Orbitz. A round trip on China Air and thirteen nights at Sir Williams Hotel for only $1,131.00, with all taxes/fees. I also took advantage of a $50.00 Qrbitz Coupon at I dug up online at www.retailmenot.com/view/orbitz.com. My two priorities when considering air travel are time and cost, with time being numero uno. According to China Air, the outbound leg from LAX included a ninety minute layover in Taipei, then a hop to Manila of about two hours, for a total travel time of eighteen hours. Not bad, since the only quicker trip I’ve taken is the Philippine Airlines read eye which stops in Honolulu for refueling lasting short of an hour then direct to Manila. That flight is around fourteen hours however you stay in the aircraft during refueling, that’s a long time to be held hostage to their uncomfortable seats and government employed flight attendants. The return on Philippine Airlines is a non-stop Manila to LAX which is even shorter at twelve hours or less.

Sir Williams

My particular China Air flight was good and bad. The seats were comfortable for me and I was fortunate even with a late check-in to get an “A Seat” in the ten across rows of the 747-400. This may sound trivial but it isn’t to me as I’m over six feet in height and the “A Seat” left side support is not installed from the floor up, it’s attached to the side of the interior. This difference is appreciated as a big guy has big feet to manage as well. The flight attendants were very accommodating as far as they could be under the bad circumstances which followed and the food was decent as well. The flight was supposed to arrive in Taipei at 6:20 AM however low clouds required a diversion to Kaohsiung (Kow-Sheng) Airport on the southernmost tip of Taiwan. Once there the plane and passengers sat on the tarmac for over four hours waiting for the clouds to lift in Taipei. Not really the carriers fault but a circumstance of travel which happens. I would recommend China Air but I’m curious if that situation in Taipei occurs more than occasionally. Arriving in Manila after a twenty hour flight, I endured what was listed as a twenty minute ride from the airport to the hotel on the Sir Williams Hotel web site, but in reality was close to two hours crawling the construction congested streets and snarled traffic common to most parts of Manila these days.

LODGINGS

Whenever you book online for accommodations you’ve never experienced you’re taking a risk. Sure, you can perform due diligence by reading the reviews but even then it’s still a gamble since some guests are easier to accommodate than others and opinions vary. The Sir Williams Hotel in Quezon City rated at three stars, seemed to offer the amenities I would normally find useful. Upon arrival they required a key deposit of $400 pesos for a $20 peso piece of plastic, the first hint of substandard lodgings. All food, beverages and services are to be paid on the spot in cash, as guests aren’t allowed a charge to their rooms and they strictly enforce a “No Refund Policy”. The room fronted Timog Ave, one of the main thoroughfares in the city. The noise from the traffic below was very loud and annoying. It was like there were no windows to dampen the sounds of trucks, jeepneys, cars and motorcycles. As anyone one who has traveled in metro Manila is aware, the locals use their horns frequently in their frantic effort to gain a one car length advantage in traffic, all the while unfazed at risking their lives and limbs, not to mention their fares and pedestrians. Also, the police use sirens for everything from rushing to the Dunkin Doughnuts to major crime scenes. If you ever find yourself being tailed by a police car here and he hits his siren, don’t pull over, it will look very suspicious. I requested a different room, not facing the street a few nights later but they denied me consideration. The hotel has an open air pool on the sixth floor, a lounge bar, restaurant, business center and massage services. The food isn’t very good and it’s overpriced. There is free internet in the business center and Wi-Fi for the lobby and second floor containing the lounge, restaurant and business center. It would have been nice if I didn’t have to leave their room to get online but it’s better than nothing. The room had a small air conditioner which was insufficient. The bed was hard which I normally prefer but not this hard. It would be uncomfortable even for Filipino’s who are accustomed to sleeping on just about anything. The cable lacked the hardware connecting it to the TV so reception was bad even though channel selection was pretty inclusive. All in all for around $25 USD per night it’s about what one would expect. What starched my shorts was the horrible staff who assumed any change due back for food, beverages or services was automatically theirs to keep. Besides two legged guests I encountered a large rat, luckily none on the floor I occupied. Also, there was some drama with a few thieving KTV Whorebags who worked the lounge on weekend nights. Oddly enough a fire of suspicious origins consumed the World Club which has a common wall with the hotel. Unfortunately the firefighters arrived in time and the Sir William’s Hotel was spared the same fate. I would rather stick pins in my eyes than ever stay there again. Needless to say I don’t recommend this clown infested shithole and will be requesting a partial refund which I will surely never receive via the owners personal email address.

QUEZON CITY

At one time Quezon was the capital city of the Philippines. Many government buildings and functionaries still exist in the municipality and it remains a thriving hub for the services industry. With many government employees and the University of the Philippines (UP), it’s more upscale then one would imagine. One of the first things you’ll notice is foreigners are few and far between. Likely other Asians from Korea, Japan and Taiwan are to be found however they’re pretty much under the radar mixing with the locals. There are a few beggars but nothing compared to Angeles City and “Vitamin V” isn’t the choice for the few street vendors you’ll encounter.

OPTIONS

Many music and dance clubs can be found near the West Triangle Area near Timog Circle which intersects Tomas Morato Blvd and Timog Ave, plus Eastwood Ave and its adjacent SM Mall and Memorial Circle near the University. Nightclubs are everywhere and pretty much cater to the crowds seeking live music. Frequented by locals, many from the University of the Philippines which borders Memorial Circle. On late week and weekend nights they are packed to the rafters with available ladies. The girls will approach you if you are attractive to them or see you’re having a good time. I took a proactive approach and had only one instance where my overtures fell on deaf ears.

Timog Circle

KTV Bars which are prevalent on Quezon Ave, a short distance from the UP. These offer a mix of talent and prices but few would allow photos once inside. What you’ll encounter after a greeter directs you to the viewing area are five to fifty ladies sitting in a waiting room. Patrons view the girls through windows painted so the girls only see about a two inch width of the patrons face. Some clubs offer stages where the girls dance topless instead of a viewing room. The service fees are for renting a room and an additional fee for the girl(s) who will accompany you to your private room, who you chose at the viewing room usually by numbered tags at the girl’s waist. These are for the mostly short time engagements however for a price you can dwell the entire night. The rooms range from 1000 to 3000 pesos and the companions cost 700 to 5000 pesos for a short time affair depending on the KTV Bar and how attractive the companion. Yes, to some this may seem very pricey but for metro Manila and surrounding areas it’s not that far from the norm. I spent a few hours in Ermita and the lack luster talent at the LA Café was quoting 3000 to 5000 for short time! A few of these establishments such as The Kremlin, are multi storied structures in which the talent gets better looking as you ascend to the higher levels. They talent level is generally higher and the ladies are typically more sophisticated than girls from the province with an eighth grade education common to Angeles City. One manager I spoke with at the Hong Kong KTV Bar stated there was no sex allowed. Whether he was covering his ass remains to be seen as I didn’t consider his bar’s services nor did I partake in any of the KTV Bars as they are too impersonal for my liking.

Another form of entertainment you can invest in are the Health Clubs which spot the landscape. Prices and introductions are similar to KTV Bars however they typically offer less lavish facilities and the talent I witnessed was of a lower standard. Not that there isn’t talent but it would take some time and effort to flesh it out. Again, they are pretty much impersonal engagements which don’t fit well for me.

If there are professionals working the streets I didn’t witness them. I spent a lot of time out late and would have noticed their presence. They must be there to some degree but they weren’t obvious to me.

I was most comfortable in night clubs, restaurants and even did well at the local SM Mall. There are many clubs and eateries, large and small and most locals, like everywhere in the Philippines are very accommodating for their guests. The clubs start to fill around ten o’clock and go to the wee hours of the morning. There are quite a few college students and local girls out for a night of frolic and fun.

One night after KTV bar hopping I checked out the lounge of the Sir Williams Hotel. The KTV girls were below average looking and would only allow nude photos when I agreed to buy about six of them a round of drinks. I did so a few of times then noticed my digital cam went missing. I asked the manager of the girls to locate it. She said no worries; the girls had gone to the CR with it to take more photos. I pressed the issue and a short while later one of the girls came back with the cam. I knew something was up so I browsed the photos and sure enough a few had been deleted. I mentioned this to the manager and she said there must be some kind of mistake. I said surely a mistake had been made and advised her that I was born at night, but not last night. I closed the tab and the waiter was dumbfounded when I gave him enough money to cover the drinks minus two rounds. Well, that started the debate between me, the lounge manager, the KTV girl’s manager and assorted KTV girls. The DEAL was clear up front, rounds for the girls and nude photos for me. The dispute lasted about thirty minutes and ended when about five of them followed me up to my room. It was principle; they weren’t going to con me no matter what. I started raising my voice causing other guests to peer into the havoc fill hallway. When the dust had settled, the manager was in tears and the bar tab was cut in half. When I checked out a few days later they had added it back to my bill however I stated my case and it was forgiven with a written note to the hotel manager.

TALENT

My first encounter was with Gracel, a student studying finance at the UP who I met at Barrakz, a local music club just a few short blocks from Timog Circle. She had come with a friend and in between sets I approached them and introduced myself. After a couple of hours she decided to join me for a late night snack with her friend taking a taxi home. After the late dinner she accepted my offer to head to the KTV lounge at Sir Williams so off we went. We didn’t spend much time in the lounge as she is the romantic type and wanted to be alone together. I spent that and the following night with her but decided to put some space between us when it became apparent she was getting serious about “us”, wanting to introduce me to her family. As is the case with non-professionals, one should handle these encounters with care and a bag stuffed with plausible excuses doesn’t hurt either.

After my cell phone charger failed I headed off to the SM Mall for a replacement. One entire level in the mall was nothing but cell phone stores, must have been fifty of them all right next to one another. While widow shopping I noticed a clerk at one of the stores making eye contact with a big smile on her pretty face. Right there and then I decided which store would be earning my business. Her name is Roselle and she has been working at the mall for just a few months. It didn’t take long for our discussion to gravitate from professional to personal. She was a bit shy at first but warmed up and decided to meet me during her lunch break in forty five minutes at the food court in the mall. Over lunch she asked the purpose of my stay and I advised her I was looking for talent in the entertainment field. She accepted when I asked if she wanted to join me that night to explore a few clubs in search of talent. After her shift she went home then took a cab to my hotel arriving around nine o’clock. We headed out and after the fourth club we made our way back to the hotel. We spent three consecutive nights together and thoroughly enjoyed our time together.

Also, during my stay I was fortunate to meet a couple of local businessmen who took a liking to me and gave me a tour of their favorite nightspots on Quezon Avenue. They were a bit consumed with their family lives since they had been barhopping, arriving home late to their wives the past few nights but after introducing them to Vitamin V, they were back in the swing of things. They had good relationships with the local mama sans, bar managers which helped and were genuinely concerned with my well being, insisting that I be treated like a VIP. Here’s a few photos of the clubs, unfortunately even a VIP doesn’t mean you can take a camera in as most big KTV Bars pat you down prior to entry.

ANGELES

After checking out of Sir Williams I took a cab to Ermita for Swagman’s Fly-The-Bus to Angeles. I was fortunate to get one of the three ground floor patio rooms at the Wild Orchid since I had no reservation. I usually stay at either the Orchid Inn or Wild Orchid during my visits to AC. Not that there aren’t a few other hotels of comparable amenities, I’ve always had good experiences there. It’s not just the facilities themselves, their staffed well and will normally accommodate their guests whenever possible. Also, as anyone who has stayed there knows, you’re right in the center of the entertainment district. As I hadn’t visited in some time I was surprised to see they have expanded the rooms and added a new pool and bar as well. Other than that not much has changed in Angeles.

I made my way to Champagnes, visited Mama Ceely and met a dancer who I had been chatting with online for a few weeks. The dancer Jingkey, is a friend of friend, a Samar Girl who swears she has never bar fined with a guy. Doubt if I’ll ever buy that line from any dancer in AC but that was her story. Story or not, she is cute with a nice body to go with it. It’s kinda funny meeting someone online then face a deeper reality in person. If only she could speak English as well as she types it. Still setting that aside, I’ve always taken a liking to Samar Girls, not sure why but many of them have a certain look that attracts me. By the time I arrived, we were supposed to be BF/GF. After two days I reached into my bag of excuses and set out for new horizons. She went back to the province not long after I left, then emailed me asking if I would buy her a ticket so she could return to AC. Some things never change at all!

The next day after checking out Illusion’s and Stampede’s I found myself early at Nifty’s, one of the closer perimeter bars. Only about five girls were working at the time and none piqued my interest until I noticed the Door Girl Katherine, who had just reported for her shift. After a short time she wanted me to bar fine her and her large breasted friend, a dancer who I wasn’t very excited about. I declined her suggestion and left with just her. It was early afternoon so we went for a swim back at the Wild Orchid. She is from Makati, speaks good English and is fun to hang out with. The next morning she asked if I would bar fine her again. I said sure, why not but that wasn’t in the cards since I was looking forward to meeting someone else in Ermita.

ERMITA

I checked out of the Wild Orchid and Fly-The-Bus got me back to Swagman’s the following day. I headed to the Butterfly Bar, a few short blocks from LA Café. The server I was to meet, Mary Jo hadn’t made it to work yet, As I was waiting for her a cute little GRO arrived for her shift. I mentioned to her I was waiting for Mary Jo and asked the manager if she would call her and let her know I was there waiting. The manager was no help and that was fine as I couldn’t resist that cute little GRO, Irene. We left for the LA Café, had a couple of drinks then back to the hotel. She spent the night and was sad to see me go the following morning. Last I heard she had quit the club and was attending college. Who knows, Who cares???

All in all it was nice to discover new adventures and I will return knowing the potential Quezon City has and this experience will make it much easier to navigate the next time around. Even without paying bar fines or tips it didn’t all come for free as I entertained the ladies I engaged however I usually entertain the gals in AC or anywhere else for that matter. As I mentioned in the beginning I wouldn’t recommend it to everyone but if one possess just two brain cells and rubs them together, it won’t be too difficult to make your way around and enjoy your feast on the local delights.

Great little report. Places like Quezon City are best saved for mongers that have been around the block a few times or stuck there for business reasons. Angeles City is where you go for variety and a sure thing. My recent trip mixed a little time in Manila, Mactan, Cebu, Angeles and Subic. Only had 5 girls, but kept one sweetie for six nights. Mactan was a total flop for mongering, but I chose a poor place to stay and scuba training was my real objective. Sleep was more appealing than the scraps left over at closing time on several nights.

Nice report...looks like you like to mix up civies and working girls.

Can't wait for the photos, will be great to see girls from the KTV's.

Why not just pay for the two drinks rather then argue with management and cause a scene? I know its the honorable and prideful thing to stand your ground, but the reality is you are in a third world country and you never know how disputes like this might end up. Why risk spending a night in jail and for what? The price of two drinks and some photos? On occasion, I have seen how these disputes can turn up. One time I remember a certain person getting arrested, spending a night in jail and then coming back after the police were paid a humble sum.

I guess we can say you did the prideful thing, but I would definately swallow my pride then spend a night in the local jail and then getting out only after paying them off. I think you did the prideful thing, but it wasnt the safest thing to do considering you are in a third world country.

Everyone gets ripped off eventually, its just a matter of how much. If you yell and scream...stand your ground, the consequences are simply unknown in these places.

Protege, if you read carefully it wasn't two drinks, it was two rounds of drinks but again price wasn't the issue. We had an agreement which was clearly defined. Had I been in a club not associated with the lodgings I may have let it slide but that wasn't the case, I was a GUEST at their establishment. Also, I've spent my working life as a sales professional. I have a pretty good grasp for negotiating tactics and how or when to employ them. I guess you're a "Watch it happen" type.

By Portege on Monday, November 15, 2010 - 10:22 am:  Edit

No, Im the type of person that chooses my battles carefully as I have no desire to see the inside of a Filipino jail cell. Standing up to someone in my hometown is different then standing up to someone in a foreign 3rd world territory. Besides jail, there are also various crazed armed characters around those parts. Here is a prime example:

http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/nation/regions/07/24/10/angeles-city-massacre-suspect-involved-2-more-killings-police

The reason for my response in this thread is that I am concerned a newbie to the Phils might read it and come to the conclusion that standing up to people in these 3rd world countries is the right thing to do in all situations. In my opinion, there are safety issues to consider therefore I would be careful of my actions and choose my battles carefully. I would swallow my pride if it came down to it.

If you felt your response was appropriate, then more power to you. I'm just saying that a tough stand may not be the wisest move all the time or for everyone.

Protege, you're correct in that travel to other countries raises many safety concerns. I would advise newbies to always be aware of their surroundings as well. That's why I never get drunk while overseas which is the easiest way to find yourself in the monkey house or with a pool stick embedded into your grill or even dead. I have walked away from confrontations as you would know if you read my TR to Pattaya. My first visit to the Philippines was in 1971 with countless visits to other SEA cities. I'm all about paying attention to safety and have pretty good instincts for what works and what doesn't. Since you weren't directly involved in that particular situation it's hard for you to judge whether I responded appropriately but I understand your prospective.

Popcorn;
I am really happy you taking your time to share this report with all Hombre menbers.
I know the mongering experience is quite diferent and more challenging in metro manila (this including QC!!!). ciertainly wouldn't recommend going this way for newbies, rather, i'll tell them to head to Angeles city or Subic (Bo Barreto). done the night rounds in Quezon and i think is a matter of preferences; wouldn't say Westerners don't go there; you'll see them for sure in the "high class/High expensive KTVs stablishments. on the same level, the more upscale the jojnt, the better quality of girls. but, be aware you'll be paying TOP PESO/DOLLAR for these ladies. as far as massage parlors, they kind scatter all over town, some of the good ones are in chinatown, an area that you won't see foreigners venture that much.
I see your point when sticking to your principles but just be aware of putting yourself in a dangerous situation. like the saying goes: "the best part of bravery is comon sense".
I do enjoy your report and the girls were cute. you can't expect all be "Binibining Filipinas", but i never have any problem finding what i'm looking for.///
