Just beware and cautious. Never let your drink out of your sight and if you do slip up and forget...order a fresh drink!

I knew when I first started traveling to Medellin six years ago that as the perception of Colombia became more secure eventually Parque Lleras and Medellin in general would become a drawing place for international tourists and a preying ground for thieves. Because everything looks and seems so clean and safe it's easy to overlook the danger. For example, where do you think the "killers" hang out in Medellin?.....Mayorista.

I'm not telling anybody not to go. The women are worth it. As I have said before, always remember who and where you are. Enjoy the life.

On one hand, I understand the tackiness of taking a ghetto chic to a high end restaurant. They have little manners and are annoying to be around.

On the other hand, as a guy also living in Latin America, I also see the real issue here. And it isn't gringos.

In much of Latin America, there exists a very pretentious and phony sense of superiority that comes with having a little bit (not a lot) of money. Gringos remind these would be aristocrats that they're only middle class, as opposed to the blue blood delusion they insulate themselves in.

In contrast to the European version of the class system, the Latin model requires little real education or culture. While some of them are professionals and have some money, the idea that they are "better by birth" than their countrymen with 4% more indigenous blood is ridiculous.

Good points with a lot of truth in reality.

In the case of PL, where it has been fashionable to see and be seen for many years, I don't think it is the ex-pat community or short term visitors that have caused the migration.

The ex-pats pretty much keep to themselves and stick to one or two favorite venues like Le Bons, Juan Valdez, Thai Co or the gay bar on 37 (always lots of chicas there becaues it is cheap)

The ex-pats are also generally an early morning to mid day coffee drinking crowd and few venture into the discos and clubs into the wee hours of the morning.

In my honest opinion, what has caused the mass exodus of the truly upper eschelon Paisas from PL is the influx of the backpackers. There are so many hostels in or near PL these days (and they are staying quite full) and the appearance of these bed head hair, shorts/sandal wearing visitors who get all drugged up and drink themselves into oblivion and make assholes out of
themselves is probably the root cause of PL loosing some of it's glamour.

Upscale places like WOKA (above Triada) are barring/limiting single men now. Take a date and she had better be dressed well/conservatively not looking like a street puta or you won't be admitted.

That and as more Paisas with full time jobs contributing to an ever growing and emerging middle class that are moving up from their barrios to Poblado, the really wealthy Paisas are moving on to more upper scale environs where the middle class and and backpackers will/can not follow. I am talking about the ones that belong to the Country Club, drive expensive SUV's and BMW's. They are selling their properties in Poblado and moving East (occidente) building large homes on large tracts of land in gated communities.

Just go to one of the 5-6 clubs in La Strada some evening (again, not for the weak of wallet) and you will see what I mean. The upper eschelons of any community will always find places where they can congregate and party without having to mix with lower class people and they generally do it by congregating in expensive locales.

Thus, what is left in PL is an emerging middle class of Paisas, ex-pats, backpackers and local "ordinarios" who do not spend like the well to do used to.

Most every restaurant or bar has food specials and happy hours now trying to attract an ever decreasing number of patrons. Several well known restaurants have closed. Hooters is doing well because of it's novelty but T and A is not what the upper social class is about when they congregate and party.

Nope, Parque Lleras is but a faint glimmer of it's former self. Somedays, even I don't recognize it when I drive through. Oh, it is still crowded in the evenings. It is just crowded with a different crowd!!

In my travels I have noticed that where ever I go, there is always some locals that feel they are superior to Americans. They don't have to be well off either.

Some are down right poor and still try to turn there nose up at an American. I guess when you don't have anything else, fools pride is enough.

When I travel, I always try to keep a low profile and not draw attention to myself.

If I am with someone that starts to get stupid and won't settle down, I will leave them.

If the locals want to look down on me it is ok, I am accustomed to that. Truth be told, I could crush most of them with my wallet. I just don't rub it in there face.

That really sucks to hear how PL has changed. I guess we all knew it would. Its been a couple of years since I have been there, but never saw any backpackers. In fact, it was pretty rare to run into an english speaker. Plenty of backpackers in Peru, but they seemed pretty low key.

The rule about watching your drinks, etc, applies EVERYWHERE in the world, including the US.. interestingly enough the only time I ever had a problem was in W. Palm Beach in a night out with my now ex-wife and our friends. My ex was pretty hammered that night when she went to the bathroom accompanied by my wife's girlfriend. It's more common in Bogota, where the flower that the drug comes from is easily found and grown. If burundanga scams are starting to happen in Parque Lleras, that's quite a development. It means it's starting to be more like the Zona Rosa in Bogota, where lots of backpackers and expats party and look for cheap drugs, but there's always the danger of being scammed/robbed.

That's too bad, I actually kind of liked PL although it's not a place I'd want to go to every weekend. I don't understand this fixation on these p4p colombia boards with partying with the colombian "upper crust"; in any case, not all the kids that go to PL have a rich daddy who owns a business or is a politician/judge/army colonel. There's a lot of regular middle-class folks that hang out there too.

But if it's true that PL is becoming less attractive to the "upper crust" I think that can actually be a good development. However, if the A-list crowd is your thing, by all means, go for it, maybe check out pegateya.com for ideas on places to go.

But there are other areas to explore in the evening. And the best parties are the ones you host yourself, either in a comfortably sized apartment or at a finca which is what you really want to do if you want to pretend you're a Colombian who's "living large." I can tell you from personal experience, hanging out in a pool at 2 or 3 in the morning in a finca at Santa Fe, with the water still perfectly warm (it's hotter over there) and a couple of hot babes at your side, is way more fun than trying to squeeze into the latest overcrowded "hotspot" with barely any space to dance or drink!

Bluelight. I know for some, $400-$500 might not be much but for many it is a sizeable sum. That might get you the first bottle or two at some of these places. I know people that have dropped twice or more that amount in an evening before realizing it and have tapped out one or two credit cards to pay their bill.

Regarding Spirit, think twice. They charged me $70 extra for luggage when I booked the flight online. I thought that was the end of it, but that was only the beginning!

I tend to agree with you. It would seem a guy would be forking out a minimum of $200 USD per day, including the costs associated with getting and staying there for the mostly mediocre to low grade looking talent IMHO, posted in the reports. To me these chicas aren't any more compelling than what one can easily procure in TJ minus the DFK. Not to mention the rise in tourist drugging, kidnappings, a seemingly high incidence of AIDS and the first hand account of the robbery which fucked up HD's stay. Ex Pats surely have better intel and methods but it won't be on my radar screen anytime soon. Too far, too dangerous and I just don't see the value.

Maybe prices are starting to rise, apparently they always do when the demand (mongers) increases without a corrresponding increase in supply. But my experience with the casas, and the reports I'm reading of the street girls (whom I will experience and report on next trip), indicate a favorable service/price ratio.

Of course, maybe I should try TJ, so I can relate to Popcorn's comment--I'm so close, all I need is someone to help me navigate the place.

I think it may be time to take the road less traveled and develop new cheaper destinations. I have found that where ever there is an increase in gringos, the price soon follows. For me personally, it's not all about price. With the exception of AC, venues which motivate me are located near an ocean which MDE doesn't offer. Haven't been there and I would assume it has some beautiful countryside but from what I can see it's mostly a large South American city largely gripped in poverty. I enjoy Rio, knowing it's on par danger wise with any city on the planet and it's not cheap anymore either. But at least it has beautiful beaches and some of the hottest women in the world. Another factor is I pull more non working girls than most which for a gringo is much more difficult in South or Latin America even though I'm fluent in conversational Spanish. Not wishing to dissuade anyone from making the sojourn, just not something I would consider at this point. I'm open to changing my opinion so help me out here guys, bring your cameras and prove me wrong.

Popcorn: Have you seen the photos from Cubanut and Av8tr? Yes, if you like the beach then Medellin is not an option. For me, Medellin has become part of my rotation along with Rio/Sao Paulo, Lima and Angeles. The New Year will surely bring new locales that I have not been to yet.

I hear ya Trek, I'm thinking Viet Nam. Hasn't had many TR's and only one since 2008. Some of the talent is Eurasian (Caucasian-Asian) which can make for a stunning combo looks wise. Has nice beaches and very affordable as well.
