After preparing for my trip to Medellin, I realized that there wasn't a lot of specific information on Medellin and that I was just going to have to do my best on my first trip as I couldn't get a room at Casa Blanca 1 or 2 as it was Thanksgiving Weekend. Nearly all of the reports were just scant information on how the street scene is run and Scooby's guide helped a bit with general information. The fact is that nearly all of the reports are just photo reports of girls that guys fucked in the gringo compound. While I would love to stay at Casa Blanca on my first trip, I do realize that staying at the gringo compound can make you lazy and its pretty far from Mayorista and the casas in Centro. There also isn't a legitimate casa map other than the gringo compound map so it is my goal to eventually set up a map with all of the casas one day to eliminate the need for casa tours.

My flight was on TACA on a red eye and there were stops in Costa Rica and Panama City before Medellin. Took out 400,000 at an ATM and got a rate of 1,900 to 1. Once I arrived, I was looking for a taxi but it was kind of deserted out front and then a guy on a mini bus told me that it was 6,500 pesos to go to centro and that he would let me know when we are close to Mayorista and would flag down a cab. The trip is long. Other than Incheon airport in Seoul, I cant think of another destination where the airport is so far from the city. It takes anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour just to get to Medellin and maybe a bit longer to Poblado. Taxi's charge 55,000 pesos but that is very reasonable considering the distance and that they have to pay an 8,000 peso toll. I ended up taking a taxi for 8,300 to my hotel in Mayorista. My plan was to stay one night at the Hotel Alcaravan and just bang a bunch of Mayorista girls close by and find another hotel online.

The hotel is ok but the rooms are small and the shower head like a street girl hotel in TJ. The rooms look better online although my room had a beautiful view and a 32inch LCD tv with a ton of channels. I was already setting up to get a room the next day in Laurelles but most were booked. I wanted to stay at the Lincoln but it was booked so booked 4 nights at Hotel San Esteban in Laurelles online. I purchased a sim for my unlocked Iphone, got situated, took a short nap and then went to Mayorista right around the corner.

I was there a bit early at about 8 pm and some of the older chicas were starting to play there trade. I ended up eating at a restaurant and drinking 1,500 peso(80 cents) Aguila Light beers. Here is a photo of the locheria and the menu:





I left around 9pm to scope the scene and realized how small of a block Mayorista really is. One thing I also realized was that the talent was pretty much on par with TJ. There were a lot of older, heavier and ugly chicas to choose from. I do realize that it was Wednesday and talent fluctuates week to week. I also know that a lot of the Casa Blanca/Mansion girls started at Mayorista so it's a good idea to get them early in the game before paying quadruple the price. I sat at one of the hotel bars to have a beer and noticed that you can also buy bottles of local rum or Aguardiente for 12,000 pesos($6) or so and included a pitcher of water and small shot glasses.

The scene in Mayorista should be duplicated in TJ but the TJ slave owners/padrotes wouldnt allow it. Basically it is a bunch of hotels for campesinos, short time hotels and bars that are open-ended. You can sit inside the bar or outside at the tables with chairs. The outside areas have an overhang and some of the tables were nice with wooden chairs and a market umbrella. The girls are not forced to be in one spot and are constantly moving around. Once you spot a girl you like you can invite her for a drink on the tables outside and it only costs 1,000 pesos(60 cents) for her drink compared to mine at 2,000($1). Mayorista street scene is next to a huge market where campesinos sell their products and then blow their cash next door on hookers and booze. I saw quite a few farmers and guys with black and white striped ponchos. You can see that the younger locals were grinding the chicas on price. From what I have been told, the starting price is 25,000 pesos for 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the girl. Some girls will include GFE or PSE in that equation but that would depend on a lot of factors.

I did see a cute black chica and invited her for a drink. We had a couple beers and got to know each other for 30 minutes or so before getting down to business. Her starting price was 50,000 pesos($26) and I told her that 30,000 for an hour was more like it. She looked in horror but I told her that I would give her 50,000 but it would have to include BBBJ, besitos and photos and stay for at least 2 hours. She seemed confused but agreed. She then asked for 1,500 pesos and said she would be back in a bit. She was back in 5 minutes and I was concerned that I would get popped cause she had drugs on her but she claimed she doesnt do drugs but only mota.

Once in the room, were ordered a couple of Colombian Club beers and she sparked up a joint that was huge. It was the size of one of those Husky pencils I remember as a kid. The weed smelled like shag weed but I closed the blinds to prevent anyone from seeing. I smoked a bit but she smoked nearly half the joint and was blowing smoke out the crack of the window. I was a bit sketched but I do remember seeing some guys smoking joints around the corner out in the open so just said "fuck it". The beers were great for cotton mouth. Eventually she was transferring smoke during DFK while I was fingering her. Did the sniff test and she smelled nice. Eventually pulled out my unit from my shorts and she was giving a nice deep throat with great tongue action as she set the joint on the nightstand. No direct flights now to Medellin from LAX and zero from San Diego. All flights to Medellin from LAX on TACA can only go through either SJO or Panama City at a minmum. Very tough to find any TACA flight to Medellin without at least two stops each way. Now Spirit has a flight to Ft. Lauderdale and then direct to Medellin but even those flights are getting harder to find as the LA flights are having layovers as well.

You guys in Miami dont know how great you have it.

I thought Avianca had flights from LAX to Bogota, but looks like they've been discontinued now that I'm checking their website. I'm not sure what the problem is with the Spirit flight option, but what about Copa? They have TWO daily flights to Panama City including a red eye. From PTY, you can fly to almost any Colombian city: Bogota, Cartagena, Cali, and of course Medellin.

If you don't mind the red-eye option, you can take a Fri. off from work and get to MDE as early as 1pm; plenty of time to get to your hotel, rest up, and then the whole weekend ahead of you to enjoy. I personally don't mind red eyes as I figure who wants to spend the daytime stuck in an airplane when you can be travelling at night? I'm not a big guy, so I can half-sleep on a plane for up to 10 hours, like on those long overnight flights to Brazil.

Anyway, the prices on Copa from LAX seem on par with Spirit's when I plugged in a few dates for January on a fare search web site. If you have OnePass ff miles, you can use them on Copa. And Copa is in the process of joining Star Alliance so that might be another way for you to get a Copa flight if you have miles in another program.

For what it's worth, Avianca & Taca are also in the process of joining Star so in the case those Bogota flights on Avianca return, that option might come back for you. You could even turn in miles for Taca, although those flights will probably remain as two connections, which I always avoid even if they cost a lot less.

I did not check Spirit, but for about $650 you can take either American or Copa from LAX to MDE, and not have to do overnight flights. Unless really a lot cheaper, I hate overnight flights. Taca was $544.

For not having to travel all night and only making one stop, I would do AA or Copa. Copa is also joining Star Alliance.

Understand that others might rather save the $100, and I just would never never fly Spirit.

Yeah, I have Star Alliance so used Taca for now. Spirit flights in February going for $370 including tax for RT but you do have the $40 in baggage fees if you have one check in bag. A carry on other than a personal item is also extra. Will look into Copa next time.

I have to admit that $370 fare plus baggage fee of $40 is less than $650, but doesn't Spirit charge and on-line booking fee. From everything I have hear about Spirit, I just wanted to stay away from them.

Maybe I should know something about spirit that I don't.

Day Two:

Woke up and had a decent Colombian breakfast which seems to always include some sort of thick tortilla similar to a pita but with corn, fresh fruit, coffee and eggs. Confirmed my reservation with Hotel San Esteban and took a taxi there. Checked in and realized that they dont have an in-room safe so had to keep credit cards, id, passport, extra cash etc in the safe at the front desk. I had the junior suite for 100,000($55) per night. Good hotels outside of Casa Blanca are not discuss much on any boards so finding a decent hotel is a bit of a hassle in Medellin. The room had good aircon, nice small flat screen tv and decent bed. Had a small fridge with overpriced items. Went to the Centro Commercial across the street from the University and pulled cash out of the Santander ATM's which had maximums of 400,000 pesos each withdrawal so took out 800,000 to last me until saturday or so. Has a grocery store at the plaza so picked up some water, snacks, etc for the rest of the trip and a couple Cialis which go for 26,000 a piece($13). Generic viagra is extremely cheap here but its too strong for me so I stick with Cialis which doesnt have generic available in Colombia(so they say).

Had Hardline meet me to go to meet some legends at Hemp's mansion in the Carocol section of Poblado. Met Sandman and Pervetivo for the first time. Hemp's place was stunning and had a 360 degree view of the city with two floors. Brought my bottle of tequila in a glass gun(Hijos de la Villa) and had some shots while drinking some Colombian beer. Hemp was nice enough to have a person cater a full Thanksgiving dinner and it was as good as any Thanksgiving dinner I had tried before. There were some guys I had not met before whom all lived in Medellin solo or with their gf or wife. Met a guy named Ronald there who is an agent that can get a range of girls from 100,000 to 200,000 depending on time and demand, etc. I made sure to keep in contact with this guy as I had seen the girls that he provided Pervetivo and they were hot. A local civilian girl caught the eye of Pervetivo and evidentally her cute friend let Perv know that she wanted to hook up. That Tortilla looking thing is called an Arepa. Part of the staple diet here.

This trip looks good, but it seems to pale in comparison to your last trip (to Cartagena). Final Thoughts on Medellin and comparisons to Mexico:

I am a newbie with Medellin so these are only my impressions and I will likely change my opinions as I get more accustomed to the place.

1. The Colombian accent in Medellin is so strong that most people who speak even advanced Spanish will have a difficult time understanding a lot of what they say. It sounds like Spanish with a strong Italian accent and the pronunciation of a lot of words are different. For example: the letters "ll" are pronounced like a "y" sound in mexico and most countries but you will hear paisas pronounce it like a portuguese "zh". They will also pronounce a lot of words with the consonant "v" like a "w" instead of a b/v sound. Takes some time to get used to it.

2. The music you hear on the radio and in the places I visited was pure salsa, rumba and some reggaeton. Never heard the crappy Norteno or Banda that blasts all day in TJ. It was a welcome relief.

If any of you want to hear Colombian radio stations, there are several Iphone apps which let you do this and a couple sites.

I enjoyed this site as it has salsa and rumba radio stations from around Colombia and my favorite is one called "Morena" http://www.colombia.com/radio/generos.asp?id1=16

3. In my limited experience Paisas are extremely sweet and know how to pamper a man. While Mexican chicas have an understanding on how to do this, it just seemed different and the girls in Medellin seem to almost wait on your hand and foot.

4. The working girls are more diverse and a lot are college educated. The conversations are almost too complex at times for my Spanish. For those that speak zero Spanish, I would stick with the gringo compound and have guys interpret for you, otherwise Medellin is a stupid place to start mongering.

5. Taxi drivers ALWAYS use their meters. Never had one argument regarding taxi fees and the taxi drivers were always friendly and helpful. I ended up always sitting in the front seat as most of the guys were cool and helpful with questions. This is the first destination where I didn't completely despise taxi drivers. The downside is that Medellin is completely spread out and you will pay a lot of daily taxi fare. If you go with a wingman, you will cut your overall costs by quite a bit.

6. I didnt try out the street action on 33 in Centro or Degrief but will try that next time. I would need to go with a guy that knows that scene as I have been told the area is real sketchy at night.

I might think of more things later, but this is a start.

If you think you had a hard time, wait til you try talking to the street girls. Their slang/ghetto talk takes a bit of getting used to. Not hard but just almost a different dialect in itself.

Yes this is very true. However, just as a personal note, I LOVE when I come across a Paisa(s) that is into classic Rock! I can't tell you how cool it is partying with chicks that love to crank out Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Jimmy Hendrix..etc. Just too fucking cool!

Do not go at night. You put yourself at unnecessary risk. I have been there at night more than a few times and the appeal diminishes quickly. Going in late afternoon to dusk is alright though.

Mayorista on the other hand is different. Have to go at night for the full flavor. The girls in the morning and afternoon can be quite scary.

A couple of scattershots:

Arepa--On my first morning in Bogota three years ago, I had breakfast at a cafe. They brought me arepa, I didn't know what it was, so asked the waitress. Some English speaking local heard me and told me it was "cornbread."

The Medellin accent--I've never been there, but on my satellite TV a couple months back they had a telenovela which was filmed in Medellin, with what I assumed were local actors. "Rosario Tijeras." It was without a doubt the hardest to understand Spanish I've ever come across...

The Spanish in Medellin (except the slang and idiomas) tends to be very formal and as close to Castillian Spanish spoken in the mother country (the Arg. people think they have the most formal Spanish though).

When I hear a Costeno talking, I immediately go into puzzled look because I can't understand a thing they are saying. Bog. is not quite as bad if they will speak slowly. It is almost funny, when I meet someone new I can hear them and almost tell where they are from in Col, especially the Costenos.

The "LL's are actually more like our "j". Llege sounds like "jay gay", llaves is like "Ja ves"

Blazers, you "were" on 33 when you went to Abydos with us. There are 5-6 other casas withing walking distance of Abydos.

I almost never go into El Centro at night. Just not worth it. If if find myself passing through to get somewhere, I almost never wait at a red light if there is no traffic. Just keep going like the Paisas. I frequently go there during the day and have yet to have any problems...except horrendous traffic.....LOL!

The working girls are more diverse and a lot are college educated. The conversations are almost too complex at times for my Spanish. For those that speak zero Spanish, I would stick with the gringo compound and have guys interpret for you, otherwise Medellin is a stupid place to start mongering
