I think I'll change my plans for a Rio trip in march or April to Medellin. I was a litle concerned about the language barrier since I can communicate in Spanish but have no clue about Portugese. I am going to CR for the Thanksgiving week and BKK for the week between Xmas and New years(10 days). From my prior CR trip I have budgeted about $2500 for 9 full days not including air or hotel. I like to take girls to dinner and dancing and don't cut many corners. How would a similar budget work for Medellin?

You're probably looking at $100 each way. They really get you with the taxes, always quoting $50, but it winds up being double.

Here's what I would do: call Satena Air. They have two flights daily from Cali to Medellin BUT they arrive at Herrara Airport in the middle of Medellin, not in Rio Negro, 45 minutes away. Call for a reservation and pay for the ticket at the airport.

While I've never flown this route, I can tell you ALL the flights from BOG - MDE sell out - so reserve as early as you can.

This is the type of plane they fly to Cali - a Dornier 328. It's actually quiet and comfortable for a prop plane. And the next picture of the all-too-frequent landslides on the narrow and winding road from Rio Negro is just one of the reasons I'd rather fly into Herrera Airport (EOH) any day.

I would rate the danger level of cheap hotels extremely low. But of course it all depends on what neighborhood you how you aproach

There are many short time hotels in areas like calle 53 or Mayorista. There are a couple near San Diego as well.

At Calle 53, daytime and early evening is fine. But it can be dangerous late night because there are alot of drug addicts around.

No problems at night at Mayorista. You can hang out all night problem free.

San Diego area is fine daytime and ok at night if you use a taxi and don't walk around late night.

There are nicer Love Motels as well if you want to pay a bit more.

Depends on the clubs again, I presume you meen strip clubs, if so I have no prices having never been to one in Medellin.

Street Girls: 20,000 to 40,000 for 1 hour.......

15,000 pesos plus, but the above prices sound OK.

Mansion Girls: 100,000 for 1 hour.....

No girls really work at the mansion, so that would depend on the girl you see there that may have just visited another resident, so that would depend on where the resident at the mansion met her, so if she was a street girl you would expect to pay street girl prices etc.

Hi Frn,, my best bet would be LAX-Mia on any airline in the am then Mia-MDE via Avianca or AA, i prefer AA becuase #1 Avianca is NEVER on time, #2 AA has to abide by the strictist FAA plane maintanance where as i dont think Avianca does and #3 I get miles on AA,, but i have to admit i did travel via Avianca with no problem besides being Late 3hrs,, good luck mongering in MDE..

Actually any plane that flys into or out of the US must meet all FAA requirements for maintenance.

So you are safe on either. But I agree with Sobe, AA is the way to go.

middle of the road prices are 60,000 to 80,0000
(best value IMHO)

and less expensive 35.000 to 55,00

the same holds true for clubs

Mayorista, is a street, a few blocks behind Mangos, it has a dozen or so bars on it, with short time hotels above and along side the bars. You will find up to several hundred working girls around the bars, most of them stand on the street outside the bars, lining the walls.
