I kind of set this trip up last minute, and thanks to the low airfare ($591 from NYC to GIG direct on TAM) and Amerioca thankfully having apartments for me to stay in, I was able to make it happen. On the ground in Rio one of Don & Ken's guys was waiting for me at the airport. I am a new member of Hombre and just getting the latest informaton on Rio. I have a trip planned in July. I usually travel to Costa Rica but United had a deal that i couldn't pass up. The termas??? Are they easy to find? And how much does the cost vary? Again, this is my first trip to Rio and looking forward to a great time. Thanks for any info you can provide..

Termas can be hard to find. 'Lumo is almost impossible, and the last thing anybody like to do is walk around the street sweating it up looking for poorly marked doors. Help on the other hand could be found by anybody.

Go to the Tree View and select South America/Brazil/Rio/Termas and then look up Monte Carlo, etc and that will make it easier to find them. Take written directions, or even a print out of the photo of the front so you will know what you are looking for.

Don't be afraid to poke around this site and use the search button.

If you read about FKK clubs in Germany you will see that each report usually begins with a recap on how hard it was to find the location and tips to help the Noob along.

huh? Luomo's is in a shopping mall and has a big sign above the door, hardly impossible. I am pretty sure it is even listed in the mall directory because that is how I found it the first time.

Look at the Rio guide and in the topics section at the top of each terma page it has the address listed. Take those and get in a cab and hand him the address of where you want to go. Most (all) give a commission to the cabbies so they are happy to get you there safe and sound. Normally you can even negotiate a cheaper cab fare, but for your first time just be sure he runs the meter.

Other than Luomo's they are all through very non-descript doors.

Tuanis, book an apartment from Amerioca.net and they'll show you around the termas and provide you with a cell phone. Thats who I used and I'd recommend them to anyone in a heartbeat. I will use their services again in the future I'm sure.

Awesome trip report and photos as usual. As you say, Rio is in no way a budget destination, but there is nothing that will eat up your budget faster than daily runs to the major termas (though I give you credit for doing a few of the budget ones and VM - however, def not my scene).

For me, Help still provides the best "bang for the buck" of any option in Rio, and I've never missed a night there - or failed to pull a GDP - in four trips. I've paid anywhere from 150BR to 300BR (just once, but a great experience), and had extremely good luck. In fact, when trying to preserve budget towards the end of trips, I always blow off the termas for a few days rather than give up a night in Help.

For me, it will be a very sad day when it closes, which now appears imminent.

Thanks for the fun report and info. Brought back some memories of my last trip to Rio which was a wile back its nice to know nothing changes in the land of the Completa.

Getrhythm, I was getting really weird vibes at Help. It kind of felt like going to a bar on New Years Eve in NYC -- amateurish. While there may be something for everyone there it seems like the #1 destination for newbie mongers and the girls seemingly have picked up on that. The few girls myself and some guys I was talking to approached were asking 500R for ST with no option for LT. I did only go inside once though...

My next trip to Rio will definitely focus more on the Centro scene, as I feel like the value there is the best and I'm not intimidated by the more 'Brazilian' spots. I'll definitely give Help another look if its still open though.

Wow! Great report. I haven't been keeping up on Club Hombre recently, so I am a little behind. I am planning a return trip to Rio in January. I was, unfortunately, one of those newbies that kept to Copa. But I loved all of the possibilities you write about.

Is Ken the man to show me the way? I imagine that he advises about appropriate prices. The dollar may have been at 2.2 when you went but it is at 1.7 now and falling rapidly, so budgeting is an issue!
