Please do not mistake me for a "friend of Lakers" or someone who defends the way in which he posts. I have disagreed with him many times and have a different outlook on posting. He is deserving of his full measure of responsibility. However, I think that if Lakers had not existed, the board would still have met its demise. There was, as you acknowledge, plenty of other BS. Likewise, I think the notion of attributing blame to a single cause is simplistic and convenient. When do any of the rest of us get to accept any responsibility for how we contributed to the problem? How is the community ever going to be rebuilt if all the actors do not change their ways. Like BP, I find that many who are quick with the recriminations and finger pointing are as guilty as Lakers. Just because they engage as part of a mob makes it no different. They probably would just do it with some other poster. Consider the example of Rick Feliz. He had repeated exchanges with Lakers that were over the top. Yet, they never degenerated into flame wars or truly destructive events. Why? I think first and foremost, RF responded as he saw fit then dropped out (strategy). Secondly, although these exchanges included personal attacks, they were not about identification of posters. RF and Lakers were well known posters with diverging views and attitudes. It wasn't "just personal" as it was a clash between contrasting ideas and the personalities who represented those ideas. However, when you have people who are popping up with new id's on a weekly basis and deliberately manufacturing a controversy (Lakers website), you can't survive as a community. Lakers and RF were well known posters who had a stake in the board. Others with phony id's (who just happened to know the entire 5 year saga) were just throwing bombs anonymously. Big difference.
