| El Cochino, Very good post!! You are absolutely correct about the many reasons a SG chooses not to work in a bar. The complaint that I hear the most is that the bars are too smoky and too crowded. In talking with my amigas who work the street, many of whom I've never 'been with', the universal reason that they work the streets is that they set their own rules and their own work times. They work when they want, and are able to go with whom they want. In a bar, if a chica says 'no' to a customer, there can be instances where the manager will pressure la chica to change her mind. Usually the manager's 'request' is more of a demand, and if la chica still refuses, often times there are other penalties to pay later on. (rigid fine enforcement, crappy hours, or scheduled days, etc.) As a SG, la chica gets to do her own thing, and is responsible only to herself. The other thing that I've found to be common is that for the most part, Street Girls tend to have a more limited education than the BarGirls. This may not a hard and fast rule, but sure seems to be the case based on las chicas with whom I've talked. This may be telling from a social and cultural perspective. Though, to be honest, I've not been able to determine just how significant the differing educational levels really are. Personally, I think that you're likely to find more non-mothers on the streets than in the bars. As was pointed out in another post, the BarGirl moms are looking to support their kids and families with quick cash. The single, non mom, maybe working in la zona mainly because it's the only way she can make good money, given her level of education and social standing. (If her alternative is to work 12 hours a day making Sony TVs for $5 per day, or working the streets for $50-$200 per day, what do you think she's going to do??)
