I much prefer the trains although Greyhound is almost 50% cheaper. The trains are more comfortable and a much better grade of passengers. Greyhound can actually be faster on the express bus from SY into LA. If I take trains (it is always at least 2 trains counting the trolley). I park at a station of my chosing (some are as secure as you are going to get). I used Metrolik to connect with Amtrak last time. You change trains in Union Station and find your Amtrak train. Only thing that ever bothers me is the Saturday mid-morning trains seem to have a lot of small children. You can walk around on the train too, check the observation car for a cup of coffee when the kids are screaming in your passenger car. With Greyhound on the other hand, you either need a ride to their sleazy stations or a secure place to park (I have such) near a station. And you have to sit and wait if you are transferring. And you do want to transfer onto a southbound express (shaves at least an hour off the ride). My last trip I missed my southbound bus because my breakfast burrito took to long to make. I hopped on trains south and used half my bus ticket to get on a northbound express back. I had to take a taxi from greyhound to Union station, I negotiated a flat $5, and then took a train to where I parked. In flat out honesty, Curious, stick to the trains. I thought I would try something different with the bus trip (flash backs to college). Even if you start or return on a different mode the $5 taxi from bus to train isn't a killer. Greyhound in SD is walking distance from Amtrak. This can be important if you get stuck in a line at the border and miss your train, you can call Greyhound and see if they have a bus for you. Then taxi to Union and catch Metrolink home.
