Thanks for sharing what can happen to anybody. Years ago a good friend of mine who looks Mexican and actually lives in TJ was mugged near the same area you were mugged. He got lazy and left the street for the sidewalk. Thinking that since other people were near it would not happen. He ended up waking up with people stepping over him as he laid on the cold floor. His pockets turned out and jewerly missiing. I have told many friends to TJ on their first visit to take only the needed cash and your drivers license. The license is only needed for ID or getting back over to the US. Most of the time you won't need it. I also suggest putting your Id and some of your cash in your shoes under the inlay. This way if your mugged you lose only a small sum. I usually keep only enough cash for one party and some tacos in my front pocket. Keeping money in your front pocket where you can have easier control using your hand to cover the pocket from pick pockets. After each party with a girl I transfer just enough cash to my pocket for the next party. It pays to wear boots or larger heavy duty shoes which also make good defense as well as a stash place. Always walk in the street and take taxi's if your alone and going to an area your not familiar with. I think this sort of info is mandatory for everyone especially newbies. The most important thing is cash and keys can be replaced but your health can't. Don't be stupid guns and knifes do exisit in the zone.
