Thank you Daytimer to share your experience with the board. I think it is very couragous to talk about something that horrible. I can understant how you must feel. Every victim of a crime goes through that. I know, I've been mugged before (not in TJ). You think you were stupid and made it all happen through your behaviour - all wrong. A few points I wanted to dwell on: 1) I never use my credit card in mexico. I know of people who used their cards at respectable hotels and apparently thuggs go through the hotels trash and use the imprints to steal your number. Cash and traveller checks are safer in that sense. I also know of cases (in Brazil and in the US) where the criminals force one to go to an ATM and max out the withdrawl. So credit cards IMHO are not safer than cash. 2) Daytimer's experience should silence all speculations on a special victim profile. I dont know daytimer personally, but know that he's an experienced monger and given that he's tall and big means that it can hit everybody! That makes me VERY uncomfortable, but it is an important info and I hope I'll be less risky in my behaviour in the future. The temptation of the zona are so many... |
