probably one of the best martial arts to take some lessons in, to know some street survival tips is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ). Skip the usual Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu type schools. I have been in martial arts for a long time (and also StrikeViking) and know what's out there.

If you are in the San Diego area, there are many fine instructors teaching BJJ. I would recommend Fabio Santos and Roy Harris, both black belts.
Their websites are:
www.fabiojiujitsu.com
www.royharris.com
All BJJ schools give a free first class so you should go in, check out the school, see what is needed to sign up for the class and TAKE IT!.

For those lazy slobs;
#1 the muggers are trying a choke hold and so the first and foremost action you need to do, is to keep your airway, blood flow to the brain open.
So, their usual MO is to come from behind and wrap an arm around your neck. You have 3-10 seconds to react. What you need to do is to grab the forearm that is choking you, with both hands, and use your body weight. There aren't many people that can still choke you out, when you are using your whole body weight and they are trying a choke hold. So, with both hands, grab the mugger's forearm that is around your neck and hold on because this action will save you from passing out. If you have to, have a friend try this on you and practice this as many times as you can. There are many other ways to survive a choke attempt, but this is the most basic one that I can descibe here, without showing you. But better, go to a BJJ school, take the free class, and if you can, take at least a month of lessons.
If you take 6 months of instruction, you should be comptent to survive a street attack and walk with realistic instead of fasle confidence in the street.
There are many sites with tons of information about self defense, but I've found BJJ to be the most effective. If any of you have watche the long Ultimate Fighting Championships, many BJJ athletes competed in those.
In the beginning, the first 4, the winner of 3 was Royce Gracie, a very thin and unassuming athlete. He was my teacher for 3 years.

This should be a warning for the cheap Muthers. I even take a cab to the border now, I don't want to get my clothes messed up, even though I can usually handle multiple (unarmed) attackers.
Be smart.
I know the young dudes, think they are smarter, stronger, faster and can run, but I don't think so.
It's just a matter of time how lucky you are.
I used to walk by myself to the border many times, walking fearless. But I've changed my mind now.

Be careful out there, whether it's walking down your own street, to walking the Zone.
