Daytimer,

Anyone who's been through training will tell you, if you 'think', you've had it. Any defensive reaction MUST be based on instinct and reaction. If you pause long enough to 'think' you'll usually find yourself in too deep to recover in time to do much in the way of defense.

Rock's advice is sound. Time in training and practice is what builds the 'instinct' to a level that you don't think, you simply 'do'. Even just knowing what to do, from a class or two will, for some people, provide enough of a foundation for the reaction to be automatic.

This weekend, though I'd not seen Daytimers posting, I had an interesting incident. I was walking down Constitution with una amiga when two 'people' came running down the street behind us. I side stepped away from mi amiga and spun around to my right as the first guy got to me. Poor guy, I grabbed his right arm, which just happened to be pumping up as he ran, and spun him into a car that was parked at the curb. His buddy fell over his legs as he went on by at a full run. Turned out they were just couple of college kids who were 'late' meeting up with their buddies at CC.

I felt pretty bad and apologized profusely, but admonished them NEVER to run in La Zona, and especially NEVER to run up close behind someone. I then proceeded to explain why this was a really bad thing to do, and at the same time explained why I'd done what I had. Fortunately, they were both okay and I wound up buying them both a couple of beers in CC as an apology.

Mi amiga told me to be more careful. I laughed and told her that this was exactly what I was doing. She smiled, said she understood, but 'made' me go buy the two guys a drink. (I was already getting ready to excuse myself to do just that) When I came back, she told me that her friends thought that I was a little nuts, until she told them that I thought that we were being attacked. As she told me this, her one friend told me that she didn't think mi amiga needed to worry any more about me being careful. (mi amiga always tells me "estar cuidado") I responded that I prefer that she does remind me to be careful because it shows that she cares, and it reminds me each time I see her that I DO need to be careful.
