You are absolutely right Daytimer - prevention is all. I have been one of the lucky ones so far - 6 years walking everywhere - often alone and at all hours - no chokeholds. It has become second nature for me to maintain 360 degree surveillance just as I do driving a car. So even if I am attacked, I like to think I'll be prepared for it and be a difficult mark - as outlined below, if you expect that arm around your neck at any time, there are defenses that can be executed within the 5 seconds of remaining consciousness. I haven't been as lucky with the more devious transvestites in the zona whose M.O. is not to choke, but to tie you up physically and mentally while they pick your pocket. This happened to me on my very first zona visit in 1995. Since then I've got nothing but a straight arm and any further resistance required for she-men in the zona who enter my space. A few weeks ago I stupidly strolled by the notorious Kinkle Bar on my way from Miami to the New York Club. Sure enough I was surrounded by two men posing as rather large SGs. I told them not to come anywhere near me. My body language and tone were unmistakeable. When the one in front of me did anyway and reached out to "touch" me, he was very surprised when I lifted him off the ground and dashed him against the wall. The other one then backed away, but not without giggling at the whole spectacle. Daytimer, these certainly haven't been your lucky days in TJ being victimized by thugs on both sides of the law within a relatively short time. Thanks for posting your reports - and I hope you've used up your quota of bad karma for now.
