The most important self defense tip anybody can give you is awareness of your environment...what's going on around you. If you're drunk, walk with a friend, or tag along with other mongers to the various bars, I'm sure they won't mind. If alone, walk confidently and look around you. Avoid walking on the sidewalk, especially around the entrances to the alley, Constitution, y Coahilla. If possible, to reduce risk, take a cab to AB or Chicago and avoid walking down Constitution. I have followed these rules and never had a hassle in all my time in zona.

Self-defense: As rock said, grab the attackers forearm with both hands. Also, don't let him drag you back on your heels with you off balance, if possible. Keep your center and balance and drop your weight down and forward, if possible. This way, he will be unbalanced instead. This can buy you a little time to fight your way out using any means necessary...scratch, claw, bite, whatever you can think of under this adrenaline rushing experience.

Training is obviously the best prep, but not everybody has the desire to devote this amount of time into it. Therefore, AWARENESS and AVOIDING the situation is your best bet because you are at the mercy of your attacker if mugged. Generally speaking, the muggers want to get in and get out with your belongings as quick as possible. Chokeholds have been known to cause death in a small percentage of documented cases in the US, so watch out. If you're trained and drunk, you could still go down hard. Cuidado is the best advice. Disneyland is in the bars, much more risk on the street IMO.
