A drivers license, expired or otherwise, does not prove citizenship anyway. The INS jerk just didn't like you. An interesting note, if you read the signs coming back into the US at San Ysidro, they clearly state "Aliens Must Show Documentation". If you are not an alien, there is no apparent requirement for documentation. The agents at the gate don't want you to know this as it supplants their position of authority (which they feel they need to justify their existence). Last Tuesday and elderly man in front of me in the walking line had no documentation, spoke no english, but insisted to the guy at the gate that he was a US citizen. The agent questioned the hell out of him but eventually let him thru. This was another one of many times I've seen people of obvious mexican origing get thru by sticking to their story and not giving in to the INS intimidation. Of course, I have also seen them take people into the back room when they didn't believe them. (Imagine there's no countries...)
