I have done this. I use Avis. When you pick up the car at SAN, you need to purchase Mexican insurance and you have to buy it from Avis. It's about $16 a day. When the girl behind the counter tells you what is not covered in Mexico, your eye will twitch a little, mine did. Don't leave the vehicle open eaily to theft or vandalism. Drive carefully in Mexico. Although the Tollway to Ensenanda is good, it is not I-5. I would hold it to about 55. Don't drink very much, if at all. If something happens, you are the outsider. That said, it's fun, buena suerte.
