Aardvark... Upon reading your missive, I galloped over to my newly discovered Mexican monger's restaurant ( about 150 yards from my adobe abode...)and asked him about car rentals...This guy is "el rey" for making long distance TJ runs...sometimes going (flying down) 3 and 4 times a month. He always rents a car at the San Dee airport from HERTZ...for 28 bucks a day plus 15 dollars a day MX insurance..total is something like 45 bucks a day...He frequently drives to Ensenada ( apparently had a restaurant down there at one time) and Rosarito, where he used to live... He does have dual citizenship...but only a California driver's license... He says that BUDGET rent-a-car has a cheaper day rate but that the MX insurance is more expensive.. He also recommends that the car reservations be made two weeks prior to pick-up. I don't know why...maybe one gets a better rate...Also if you book through the internet one can frequently receive signicant discounts on car rentals ( there's usually some kind of numerical code you have to punch in to recieve the discount...)
