The trip you describe has been done and reported on. I believe it was entitled the 2,000 mile tour. I also think that it was (is ?) available as a link from some major site(s), which is how I came to know of it. There are a lot of border towns with action. In the opinion of the authors (and I concur) nothing comes close to TJ and/or NL. Aficionados of Juarez often take exception with this, but hey who cares.
