Interesting article in the Sunday LA Times Magazine about Lynn Conway, a transexual (surgically altered woman who was born male), who played a seminal role during the 60s and 70s in the development of supercomputer technology at IBM and, later, personal computer technology at Xerox. The article traces her professional career, which is pretty amazing, as well as her psychological journey from male to female, which is soboring.

You get a good feel for how confused these individuals must be, seeing themselves as women "captive" in men's bodies or vice-versa.(For example, she never considered herself homosexual because she saw herself as a woman attracted to men, i.e., "heterosexual".)

The article also has an interesting discussion of the present level of knowledge (or lack thereof) about the nature of gender. If Conway's story is typical, it's a pretty harrowing psychological journey. Next time I run into one of the SS or Bambi "ladies", I'll try to be a little more understanding.
