The theory behind the extensive check on one's person when applying for the Sentri pass is to perform the same/similar function of the INS officer. The INS does not want to have an international relations nightmare on their hands by having drug smuggler's, gun runner's, terrorists using, or being in a vehicle that utilizes the Sentri pass. (Thereby gaining quick/easy access to cross the border into the US). Continual complaints regarding the overall time it takes for a car to cross the border, plus the opportunity to generate a new fee collection device are what is currently driving the INS to implement the Sentri pass. The invasive nature of the application for the Sentri pass has a chilling effect upon would-be users. All application information is entered into a database. Who knows exactly how and where that information is being disbursed, and for what purpose(s).
