I have traveled the world into some really tough environs. It helps to be visible... ok, BIG to discourage that activity and walk with eyes in back of your head. Actually going to the same places, I find that I just blend in and am not noticed as much as going somewhere new. Make sure to get eye contact and be pleasant with "gracias" and "propinas". I also go with a buddy or two to make the task a bit harder. Toughest place I've been was the Phillipines where they were used to GI's and knew how to mug you with a smile and an a sharpened butterfly. First time in TJ over 20 years ago, I was not only mugged, but had 6 of them beat the crap out of me with a cop standing right there. Next time we went prepared and compensated them with some Marine hospitality.
