Good luck now that holiday season is at hand. There use to be a site called last minute travel . com (all one word). I did not see if it was still active but it had flights that were leaving in a period of one week to one day at very cheep prices (ie. LA to New York 259). The catch was they were only one way most of the time. Your best bet is going to find the cheepest way to Southern Calif. head to TJ and take a flight from there. You may consider Arizona and bus yourself to San Diego.
