I agree with what has been said so far about being safe in TJ. Avoidance is the best defense. Taking cabs in and out of the zone is the safest. If you walk be sure to walk in the street. Don't let anyone get behind you. The muggers work as teams. They use the element of surprise and can take down even the biggest and toughest guys in seconds. Even if you take all of the precautions, have a backup plan. What would you do if you lost everything, wallet, license, money, jewlery, watch, glasses, and car keys? How would you get home? No locksmith is going to open and make a key for your car with no ID and money. Be prepared for anything. Have an extra key in a magnetic box hidden under your car. Have your main money and license in a credit card holder hidden in your socks stuffed inside your shoes. Have a "decoy" wallet in your pocket. If the muggers don't find a wallet they will continue to look until they find one. Remember, TJ is a large city and there are bad guys, as there are in any big city. Don't assume nothing is ever going to happen to you. Be very careful and have fun.
