There are some of us that would like to learn Spanish in the worst way. I know the advantages, that is why I would like to learn. However, unlike the myriad of programs available to learn english, the options to learn Spanish are college courses or home study. I would personally prefer to actually learn Spainsh, so I am looking toward a community college course. Funny thing about that, too. Since I only recently moved here, that simple Spanish course will only run me about $600 for one semester. And that is through the community college. If there were more options, I would exercise them. Unfortunately, it looks like I will have to wait until I have been here a year, then that same course will cost around $60.

I probably would have taken Spanish during college, but I couldn't get any credit for it, I have an engineering degree. I took some French during high school, so I definitely agree with your evaluation of the many benefits of learning a foreign language.

I do also agree that it is incumbant upon US to learn THEIR language. It is their country. I am thankful that most of the merhcnats and many of the chicas speak English, to varying degrees. However, I feel the standard works two ways. THEY should learn OUR language if they want to come here and exoect to do well. That might not be a popular statement, but it is how I feel.

There are reasons why some of us haven't learned. It is not for lack of desire.
