When I first read Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet in school, it didn't make sense. They were both so irrational and lousy problem-solvers. However, when I saw the Hollywood movie that came out in the 60's or 70's, suddenly it fit. Juliet was 14 years old! They were a couple of lovestruck young kids lost for the first time in overpowering emotions. Of course their behavior was irrational. "Quinceaneras" (Keen-say-ah-NYAY-rahs) One of my favorite books on Mexico is The Days of Ofelia by Gertrude Diamant. It was published in 1942 and captures life in Mexico City then. The last story in the book is about a young girl of about 16. She's pregnant from a guy of 21 who she finds out is married, and she commits suicide by jumping from a high building. (Really rotten problem-solving). "...deep in their hearts, their first novios, first esposos, first amantes that they have left in their home town, those are the guys that they consider their first and true loves." Particularly if they were only 15 or 16 at the time. Regards,
