I've seen many of Almodovar's films - favorite being his silly broad comedy, "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown". Penelope Cruz btw is prominent in his recent "All About My Mother". Since we're on the subject, the most interesting Mexico themed film I've seen recently is a small independent number called "Bajo California" ("Under California") - a Mexican American haunted by the prospect that he may have killed an illegal immigrant running from la migra on the road, journeys from TJ and down through Baja to rediscover his Mexican heritage at his ancestral village, and in the surrounding mountains that contain incredible primitive cave paintings. It's quite a tour of Baja, and a study of the indigenous culture and sensibilities as contrasted with that of the "evolved" Mexican American. Incredible outdoor cinematography on a par with "All the Pretty Horses" - and this is a low low budget film. Btw if you are a Cruz fan, in addition to the Almodovar film, her most prominent role is probably in a 2-3 year old critically acclaimed Argentine film called "Abrir Los Ojos" (Open Your Eyes) widely available on VHS. This film is a wild surrealistic tour de force - you may want to have some Mezcal on hand.
