If you compare the US attitude toward sex relative to European countries, yeah, the US is repressed. But, the US is far ahead of most Asian countries in terms of sexual "freedom". In Japan, for example, it is illegal to show photographs of genitals in magazines or movies. Yet, Japan "tolerates" prostitution in restricted zones. What you must remember is, prostitution being the oldest profession on earth, there is no need for the government that permits prostitution to be "progressive". Many governments in history have legalized prostitution in the intention of exploiting women. In fact, I'd argue that the prostitution in Southeast Asia (Thailand and Phillipines) is, for the most part, the consequence of downright human rights abuse, i.e. families selling off their daughters. Prostitution in Japan is not as bad, but, outside prostitution, Japanese women have virtually no professional opportunities to make seirous bucks. I'd even argue that the legalized prostitution in Nevada, hardly a progressive state, has little to do with sexual freedom. It's main purpose is to legalize pimps (brothel owners). I support women for their rights to prostitute themsleves, if they choose to. But, whether a country permits them is a grossly inappropriate measure of sexual freedom.
