One of the best books I read about prostitution before engaging in the hobby was written in the 1880's by a woman who was first a prostitute and then a madam of a house out in the West (Wyoming, etc.). The title is Madaleine. When she ran her own house, she hired a guy as a handyman and shopper. His job was to go into town and buy supplies for the girls as they couldn't. The "good people" of the town did not want to ever see the girls out in public. Particularly the wives of the men who rode out of town to visit the little "home out on the range".
