I think the term "gringo" used to be derogatory, but it has become rather generic. Although the meaning is obviously different, you could draw an analogy to the word "gay", which used to be a slur, but is now used by "them" to describe "themselves". Of course, if someone says "pinche hijo de tu pinche cojida gringa madre", you could consider this do be derogatory!
