I had always heard that the term originated when the American soldiers were at war in Mexico,their uniforms had green jackets or coats,and so the Mexicans would yell..."aqui vienen los Greencoats"...which later was bastardized to gringos.Now that I think about it,that sounds like a bar story! a. |
