I am too lazy to write a bunch of different posts that will likely just get buried in a smoldering thread. But far be it from me to keep my mouth shut, either, so here goes: I have never had a problem walking anywhere in TJ, though Jaime and I witnessed a mugging about midnite one night in bandito alley. As Redongdo mentioned, when I walk from the border I head straight for Coahuila toward La Tropa. I walk quickly and am definitely nervous about it, walking in the street for the most part, but the area is so quiet (there are a bunch of auto repair shops there) that ANYTHING out of the ordinary would give you cause for alarm. Running a block in either direction will get you to fairly safe territory, but if someone DID try something in the block two blocks before you get to Revolucion you would be hard-pressed to find someone to help you after dark. Of course the presence of bystanders has never been the problem in bandito alley… I'd rather err on the side of going where the banditos have yet to establish themselves, personally. Re: the walk down Revolucion past Motel Alaska to Coahuila, I don't do it every day, but if you walk in the street I don't see how you can have much of a problem. There are some bums that hang out on the corner of Rev and first street, but the rest of the people around are mostly taxi drivers taking a break. Re: stumbling around when you're drunk… I wouldn't recommend it, or anything, but TJ is like most places in the world in that when you're stumbling around acting (?) crazy, people tend to give you a WIDE berth. Fucking with a crazy person is a bad idea. Speaking of taxis, if you're nervous about getting mugged or especially if you are not SURE of where you are going and what is around the bend, I would strongly recommend cabbing it and having some peace of mind. I sure didn't have peace of mind the first time I ever visted the Zona, however, as the first time I got in a taxi at the border I was scared to DEATH. I had NO idea where I was, the cabie coulda been a serial killer fro all I knew, and if the guy had taken me to the middle of nowhere and said 'tu dinero o tu vida' as I imagined was coming at any moment, I woulda shat my pants and started crying. The guy seemed to make a bunch of weird turns (I knew nothing about all the one way streets), but after making a Y turn and dropping me off in front of Adelitas at 11 AM with the comment 'Poosy es-smell goood deees err-ly een dee morr-'ning' (think he's a Robert Duvall fan?), I felt pretty good that my little adventure was going to bear fruit. Re: Adelitas chicas that speak English, the recently returned Tania is way above the curve and has an amazingly cute accent. Happy Birthday, too, baby. Re: Where to watch the Super Bowl… I'd vote for Caliente (but be EARLY if you want a seat) and against the Zona, because while you will find the game ON in just about every bar w/ a TV, err, uh, make that TELEVISION, there's something weird about watching TV w/ no sound, and I doubt the Super Bowl will qualify for an exception to the no sound rule. I mean it's not the bi-monthly HBO fight night, or anything. Also, if there IS volume, it almost surely will be in Spanish, where at Caliente it's in English. Not generally a big deal, but if you are serious about the GAME, keep this in mind. Oh, on this note... Anyone ever brought a universal remote to Cascadas to see if you can get volume on the porno channel? I think they used to HAVE remotes in the jacuzzi rooms... As far as super bowls and the Zona are concerned, I remember like it was jesterday hanging around in an empty HK last January drinking XX with my ACQUAINTANCE Otra Vida, getting rapidly miffed that my date for the afternoon was clearly not materializing. I finally got ahold of the chica by phone right about kickoff time, got Otra Vida to tag along to babysit the baby sister on the date (me setting HIM up??? History is WEEEEEIRD!!!) and don't recall seeing a single play until the Mike Jones game saving tackle on the highlights. Super Bowl Sunday the year before was probably the only day in all of 1999 that neither Bumpy nor I was in TJ! Of course he MOVED there and I just LIVED THERE. Ever wonder what Ray Lewis' thoughts are on the Rae Carruth trial? OK, I've babbled enuff for now. |
