My simple advice is: Don't bring anything that won't fit in the trunk of a car, and then hope you don't get stopped at the border.

For some reason they get really upset when they see a gringo bringing stuff into Mexico.

One chica I knew managed to get her entire household across the border into Mexico, but she paid the guy at the border off to let it pass.

Much of her stuff went in many small trips in the trunk of her car. Only the big stuff went in the truck. BTW, I ALWAYS get pulled over and inspected when I drive my truck in. Often I also get inspected when I have my van (it's a commercial van without side windows).

Best advice is - don't take anything you really don't want to lose. Take a little at a time. And get a Mexican to ride with you if possible.

Oh, and computers are possible, but there is a 45% duty.

Finally, a friend once told me - they are 1,000% more careful at the Otay Mesa crossing than at the San Ysidro crossing. And more expensive....
