You can not really say you are ever "safe" in the North Zone. The number one rule is to watch your back. Walk in the street because you can see if someone is approaching from behind and no one can jump out of a doorway and surprise you. In the street you will have time to react if there is trouble. The chances of getting mugged are low, but it is important to be ready for anything. I have three times have been walking the sidewalk and had problems. Once a beer bottle flew out of a dive bar on Constitution and almost hit my head. Another time a fight broke out in a bar and a guy was shoved out of the door and was slammed down on the sidewalk, just missing me. And the last time I walked the sidewalk I was mugged. So, take it from me, it is important to walk the streets, but be careful of the traffic. Some crazy things can happen on the streets also.
