It is understandable that a Filipina culturally identifies herself as an Asian and PI. However, these categories are also used for political purposes. For example, many colleges still employ affirmative actions in student admissions, and they do this by designiating certain races as "underrepresented" minorities. In many top colleges, Asians (dominated by Chinese, Koreans, and Japanese students) are NOT underrepresented, while Pacific Islanders are. A filipino student will be automatically classified as an Asian, not as a Pacific Islander. This may not be totally fair, but the objective line has to be drawn somewhere.
