I used to live in a super apartment complex in Alexandria Virginia, just south of the pentagon. There were 6,000 guys and gals in the complex with about 3 girls for every guy. Almost every night coming home I'd meet someone new in the elevator. After awhile I noticed that many, many of the girls were from the coalfields of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky. It seems that the recruiters for the government agencies went hunting for secretaries and clerks at the career days of high schools in areas with high unemployment rates and little opportunity. The girls were happy to take a low-paying job and start an exciting life in the big city. Timeless economic principles of supply and demand. Regards, |
