It is customary to 'show some appreciation' for help that is given to you. In MX, this usually would take the form of a tip of some sort. The guy got you back your leather jacket, which would have cost you $150 or more to replace. Next time you're down, I'd suggest that you use your Spanish skills to again thank the guy, and give him a tip of some sort. Trust me, he'll remember you in an even better frame of mind.
