Folks: Spent the afternoon on Thu at La Carreta Bar at the invitation of mi novia(?) as she is currently ducking her daytime dancing duties at AB and looking for a more stressfree environment and thus she is searching for a bar with the proper vibe and...I digress... My general observations regarding La Carreta Bar will be divided into a pro-con format: Pro: 1. Master of Ceremonies Pancho Lind(sp)...his ribald sense of humor and consistent professionalism deserves better than this perch on Callejon Coahuila...the dancers seem to have a genuine affection for him and the fact that he was cracking-up the barkeeps and maseros all afternoon indicates that his schtick is neither stale nor old...too bad his audience consists of a half-dozen lonely Mexican ranchhands drinking themselves senseless... 2. Hombre Vaquero Jose Quinojo(sp)...La Carreta trotted out this aging Cowboy at around 6pm for a fullon lassoe-show...you know, rope-twirling and all that...while his skills have no-doubt eroded somewhat over time, his sheer earnestness scores him major points...if you ever catch his act, make sure you drop a propina in the collection plate... 3. $4 chica ficha drinks!!!...A pretty fair price by Zona standards, I thought... 4. Hotel Cascadas!!!...At least, mi novia(?) was able to use Cascadas for our "tiempo de amor"...didn't see any of the other chicas go-up... 5. Extremely low Gringo count...occasionally an intrepid Monger would appear, but typically for no longer than it took to down his respective cerveza... Con: 1. From a looks standpoint, the chicas were pretty lame...nice girls-- no question-- but no lookers from a purely physical standpoint...not to brag-- and I am desperately trying to be objective here-- but mi novia(?) completely lapped the field in this all-important event...
Of course, and as always, YMMV... YoungBrig |
