When I first saw the new AM/PM, it stood there on the corner like a glass and aluminum apparition, totally out of character with the neighborhood. But returning to VZ in the wee hours, I have to admit I ducked in there for bottled water and fruit juice. (All right, I got a donut too.) It was 3 a.m., and the bars had just closed, so there was a crowd of the strangest people getting "essentials" like bubble gum, cigarettes, candy bars, and twinkies. It's nice to have a 24/7 store in the area, but I have a feeling I'm still going to regret the day that's coming when this part of TJ loses its unique retro-sleaze charm and begins to look like an over-developed retail area in Chula Vista. |
