Another example(I just love examples):

Two paths to choose for a graduating high school student:

Go to college or work at a fast food restaurant.

Logically everyone would say you would be stupid not to go to college and choose to work at a fast food restaurant.

What if:
In College you get killed by some guys you got into a fight with.

If you choose to work at a fast food restaurant you (may) have prevented your untimely death.

So who's to say what decision one makes is stupid or smart.

My new philosophy is nobody will ever know. Try to do what makes you the happiest for the longest period of time.

Trying to figure out if you made a right or wrong decision is useless(IMHO) because it is impossible and will drive you crazy. It is impossible because as I said each decision you make affects the next decision until you are dead.
