That happened to me when I was in college. After a hours and hours at the police station I convinced them to let me spend my evenings in a hotel and hang out in the front part of the police station during the day. It was a long weekend. I had insurance on my car which ultimately did pay for all the repairs but wasn't worth anything at the time as far as leaving town. While warming the chairs in the police station I watched them bring in a bleeding man who had lost control of his car during a downpour and had crashed into a retaining wall hurting no one but himself. He didn't get out either.
