I have. I have been popped for drinking and being in a slight state of undress (it was the girls fault, not mine!) in a parked car. Given the option of payint a $30.00 bribe or going to the station, we opted for the station. I had to wait about half an hour for the juez calificador to det to me, when he did I basically got a lecture about showing proper respect for the law, and had to promise not to do it again. Then he let us go. End result? I wasted about 45 minutes, but paid no money. Seemed fair to me. What happens MORE OFTEN, is that asking to go to the station will cause the police officer to send you away in disgust. This happened to me two sundays ago when I made an illegal U-Turn at the traffic circle in front of the cultural center. After the cop dropped several hints that I could save a lot of time by him paying the fine for me, and me insisting in going to the police station, a "sudden radio call"forced him to return my documents and send me on my way.
