Over the weekend, I spent some time in Chevales talking to the chicas (while waiting to head out to San Felipe with a chica). You guys who don't speak Spanish don't know what you're missing in terms of weird stories, or what really goes on with the chicas. One pair of chicas live with a guy, who lives off their earnings. Apparently, he's the padrote for the both of them. One of his rules is that they can't go to the hotel with clients - if if he finds out that they have done so, he beats the crap out of both of them. The two chicas therefore are very careful about getting too drunk, since they might end up in the hotel. So, what they do is one works as a mesera and serves the other while the second one works as a fichera. When drinks are ordered, the mesera makes sure that the second girl gets only water in her drinks (kind of a mutual protection deal). Another chica was telling me about her life back in Chiapas. She got married at 14, which apparently is very common down there. However, unlike the usual case of an older man snagging a child bride (the chica's mother had married at 12), this chica herself was robbing the cradle, as her hubby was only 12 at the time of the marriage. |
