I think Curious is right on, as usual. He must have very significant experience with Mexico. Yes, I have been fascinated too by the "if we don't acknowledge it, it ain't there" aspect. While I don't have any stories as good as Curious', I too have had a zona friend or two. These girls absolutely do draw a line between "my work" and their lives. And they don't want the two to mix either. I am constantly amazed at how nice many of these girls are. Sometimes it's like you're screwing your neighbor's daughter or something. Just good wholesome nice girls who are a little radical on the side. I speculate this has come about due to the extreme economic problems in Mexico. It has created situations where the disparity between the lives and circumstances of "those that do" and "those that won't" is so enormous, it becomes OK to be a "do girl". Since the idea seems so repugnant, the best thing is let the girl earn her money, and we'll just look the other way as to how she got it. She owns her home, her kids are well-cared for, the family is provided for, who's to argue with that over a few scruples? Not me.
