I am thinking of retiring in about five years and living part of the time in Mexico and the US. For those really interested in differences there is an excellent book by Mike Nelson "Living Better South of the Border. Mike has a web site at Mexico Mike .com. Bottom line is if you want to live like an american in Mexico in say a heavy populated american colony like Guadalajara you can do so, but your cost will not be too much lower than living like an american middle class in the states. Of course you could probably have a maid If you chose to live like a mexican middle class person away from an american colony then your savings can be very good. Mike discounts baja because he does not travel that area, but he does say that Cabo San Lucas probably will not be any cheaper to live than say California. His book and his web sites have a lot of interesting info and what I have found is that the info is pretty reliable.
