I used to spend a lot of time hanging out at the taco stand talking to my friend Ricardo. He was nice to the kids in the neighborhood and they would come around all the time and I used to talk and joke around with them often. There was a girl in the little group that was very pretty and when I first met her she was 13. She was a sweet kid, very friendly and trusting. She got a lot of attention from the boys in the area, and also had the odd monger who would flirt with her to a degree that I thought was shockingly lecherous. She was, after all, only thirteen...

Well, fast forward more than a year... I'm walking through the alley one day and guess who I see? That cute little 13 year old that I used to play cards with at the taco stand. 'Cept she was 15 now. And hugely pregnant.

I had never had any sexual thoughts about this girl, though I sometimes feared that growing up in the Zona environment might lead to her plying a trade in the bars right before my eyes. Usually strike number one along those lines for those working the Zona would be single motherhood at a young age. Bingo.

I told her it made me sad to see her pregnant at such a young age, that she was still just a kid herself. She told me 'it's OK, I'm in love, and the father lives with me, and I am happy about the baby', etc. I obviously felt MUCH better after that!

I didn't knock this girl up. I am not her parent or even really a friend. I won't have put a gun to her head if/when she decides that she may need to get a 'job' in the Zona to support her new family. But am I wrong for feeling guilty about her situation? I and people like me created the Zona economy. Her parents chose to raise a family there and let their kids roam those bizarro streets like stray dogs at all hours of the night. She did as the Romans did, and now looks to be the poster child for corrupted innocence.

Teens get knocked up all over the world. This is not my fault and there is nothing I can do to stop it. I know that. But when I see teenagers in the Zona plying their trade it makes me feel like I need a shower. And some tequila.
