Thanks for the tip on the book. It sounds like just what I've been looking for (but not finding at Border's and Barnes & Noble). I'm especially interested in Part II and the "whore stigma".

A professor friend of mine returned from Italy recently and told me about his tour of the Roman Coliseum. Apparently, rich citizens could watch the games from the Roman equivalent of luxury boxes. Food and alcohol were abundant in these boxes, of course, but they had little side-rooms where guys (don't know about the ladies) could slip away and boff prostitutes (males and females) when the action on the field slowed down.

It got me wondering how it came to be that two thousand years ago sex work was so acceptable it was happening literally in public, while today, in our supposedly more enlightened era, our society either criminalizes it or relegates it to the nether regions of Nevada. Since both the ladies and the customers feel the effects of this social stigma, it's something of great interest to me. Thanks again.
