I started meeting guys from the Net way back when we were posting on ASP, and then ASPT. In those days it seemed like almost every weekend we had some guys getting together at the border, often going to dinner, and then sometimes hanging out in La Zona (or not, depending on the guys). I was at the first ASPT dinner, and during those first years I met quite a few guys - many of whom are either no longer around or at least no longer post. Before meeting anybody I had always been a lone wolf in TJ - and kinda liked the anonymity that offered. Here was a playground where nobody knew me, so what I did and where I did it didn't matter to anyone but myself. Things changed after that first dinner, where 10 of us got together. I realized just how MUCH they had changed when a few weeks later I did a bombing run to TJ - leaving work at 5:30, getting to TJ around 9, and getting home the next day in time for breakfast. Waiting for me was an email from one of the guys I met at the dinner - a guy who was at home in Canada - but who had already heard thru the grapevine that I had been in TJ!!! I would say 90% of the guys I have met have been OK. Many are very different than their Net persona. Many have "evolved" along with me, and it has been interesting watching that evolution. A few haven't, and that has been interesting as well. The one big factor to consider is that you can NEVER go back to being unknown. It's kinda like losing your virginity. Once you are known to a few guys, you will soon be known by even more. And you can never undo it. But I have made some good friends over the years, and so overall I would say it has been worth it. |
