After sharing an experience with CAPnDAVE in response to a question of his by EMail, he thought it would be beneficial if it got wider circulation. In one of my posts on Juarez on Redsnake I told the story of a young man I met in Juarez who told me he always would never travel alone in Juarez because in the old market section of Juarez at night two policemen shoved him up against a wall, shined a flashlight into his eyes so he could not see who they were and stole $300 out of his wallet. He was an obvious target with blond hair. While in the Zona I have always been careful to avoid any police, and one night the last time I was in Juarez I was leaving my favorite "casa de citas" and walking on a near deserted street out of the zona, when a male and female police came running up to me out of the darkness and wanted to know if I had been drinking. I told the male officier in Spanish that I had 1 beer only. He wanted to know what my occupation was and when I told him I was a doctor it took away some of his bravado because he realized I could really make some trouble for him and could not be bullied easy. He wanted to know what I was doing in Mexico and then searched me and then wanted to see inside my wallet. I had only alot of $1 bills and had the big stuff inside a hidden compartment of my shoe. The $1 bills were not enough to tempt him to rob me or make up some fake charge and so he let me go. The female police with him has a very bad reputation for corrupt behavior, I have seen her shake down Mexican drunks as good as the men. The penalty for getting drunk and on the street when the police come by is getting all the money in your wallet stolen. This female police officier gets the prize for being the most evil looking female I have ever seen. So now I usually leave the Zona before the 1:00 am police sweep or I take a taxi and dont walk because I dont want tobe a target again. I look like some school teacher and I am not a large person and weigh only some 190 lbs but have never been beaten in a fight and as you might expect from a Kung Fu Master and I could have killed both police very quickly if they had of tried to pull something I considered illegal-but I am really glad it didnt come down to that and in the future will be even more careful to avoid them. I now appreciate the honest Amercian police and our system of government after seeing what can happen in Mexico, however recently 8 policemen in San Antonio were arrested by the FBI for providing protection for a drug shipment...perhaps the Internal Affairs Depts of the police depts should start giving polygraph periodically to the entire police force to insure upright behavior. I did not know until the new Mexican President took office that the Mexican Border Police were shaking down Mexicans returning to Mexico for bribes and now apparently most of the Mexican Border Police supervisors have been replaced. |
