There was a dude from the mid-west somewhere who was convicted of "drug smuggling." The "smuggling" was he crossed the border for an afternoon and bought some controlled substances (like valium and diet pills) at a pharmacy. The pharmacist told him it was all OK. The dude had planned to bring it back for use by himself, family and friends. I think the total value was like $500. He didn't have a mexican prescription. The police happened to be staking out the pharmacy and busted him when he left. He spent like 6 mos. in El Pueblito, and some $40,000 on legal fees (bribes? who knows). He also said he had to pay for everything in prison. Everything from your room, your food, everything. I suppose TJR may have seen some of the ones that don't have any money. The pharmacist I believe was still there months later. The guy went down to the border on his next visit to So. Cal, but wouldn't cross. I don't blame him. To this day I wouldn't buy a fuckin' aspirin down there. So there are Americans in El Pueblo. I've heard it is a shithole, but I didn't think it was as bad as TJR's description. Like I didn't think people were starving or anything, or denied basic healthcare. But it sounds more like a WWII prison camp than anything else. There is a poster on this board who makes semi-regular trips into El Pueblo for some reason. I don't know his line of work, but it must be outrageous. There is also a young dude in a prison near Juarez who mistakenly crossed into MX after a hunting trip. Realizing he had illegal weapons in his van, upon arriving at the border station in MX told the guard he had to return to the U.S. because of his guns. He was arrested for importation. Last story I saw in the paper he had lost considerable weight. He was extremely fortunate in that his case attracted national attention and there were some govm't officials trying to negotiate his release, but the mexicans were being a bit obstinate. I'm sure there are others and no one knows or cares who they are. matiz, do you know San Quentin because you did some time? are you sharing that with us? Wow. Is that where you became so philosophical?
