I've always though of the US as a weird mixture of REAL individualists (who used to be more numerous, but are dying off and being replaced by fake-ass 'individualists' who do just what they want, provided everybody else is already doing it) and Puritan fascists who control most of what's really important in American culture (ask both a Democrat and a Republican if they think prostitution and drugs should be legalized and see if they don't find some BIG common ground, real quick). Since I didn't spend my whole childhood in this place, I managed to avoid most of the jingoistic bullshit that infects the brains of many full-blood Americans I know (the kind of idiotic robots who go on vacation in Europe in order to look for a McDonald's, then denounce the locals because they don't speak English). Just like you, I stay because the money's better and the taxes are lower than most other alternatives. But culturally, this place is ALL fucked up, with the little God people and their Puritan feminist allies doin' everything they can to keep anybody from havin' any fun at all.
